memes are good when i'm bored

Okay, so I am fully immersing myself in the Star Trek fandom (and by "fully immersing", I mean "reading the fic and not speaking to anyone". It's like the Buffy days! Speaking to people in fandoms is where I went horribly, horribly wrong, re: Doctor Who. I miss the days when you could say something as mild as "I love that episode!" without being told you're a horrible, horrible person). But I just read Break by , and I fell in love with Star Trek all over again. It makes me want to go see the movie right this second. It makes me want to finally get around to watching all seven seasons of TNG like I keep meaning to. It makes me wish that we'd had five or six more hours to devote to everyone's backstories, because if they were this eloquent, I wouldn't have minded my ass going numb to watch the neverending stories of Star Trek. Part two and part three are here, and I never talk about fic that I rec, I just rec it. So if I'm talking about it, you know that I must reeeeeeeeally love this story.

Watching Anthony Bourdain talk about the common "What would you have for your last meal?" question got me thinking. Vegetarians should look away now. I know that chicken would be on it. Chicken is my favorite of all the meats, closely followed by pork and catfish. When it comes to comfort food, I tend to go black. I still hate chitlins with the passion of a thousand fiery suns, but I go pretty black. Soul food is comfort food.

And yet, I've done enough cooking/eating to want to mix it up a little. So I'd start with a potato soup or French onion. My two favorite types of soup, they always make me feel very warm and satisfied. Then I'd move on to a pasta. I'm a big pasta-lover. Maybe some lasagna - actually, vegetarian lasagna. I had some a few years ago and I'm a pretty big fan. I'd like some more of that for my last meal. Then I want to move on to the chicken. I prefer it baked, not fried, since I tend not to eat the skin anyway, and baked's healthier. Baked chicken breast, seasoned. And I add 'seasoned', because I like my food to have a bite. I like it to be spicy, I like it to make my eyes water, and if most of my food doesn't make the room feel a little warmer after I try it, I'm not doing it right. So spicy chicken, please.

And then hot links. These are somewhat like a bratwurst, but if you want actual hot links, you should probably get them from a butcher. Preferably one in the ghetto part of town. Actually, if you want, you can just give me my entire meal from any rundown building that has a name that ends in 'Joint', 'Shack' or 'Hut'. Bonus points if the name starts with "Jimmy's" or "Leroy's". But I love hot links. Looove them. They're like bratwursts times ten. I want catfish, hot links and maybe some ribs. The kind where you can't pick them up to eat them because the meat just falls right off the bone. My husband makes some good ribs. That's why I married him. That, and he makes a taco that almost makes me cry, it tastes so good. And I won't even tell you about his chili, we'll be here all day.

For vegetables, I want greens. Spinach is an acceptable substitute, but I'd prefer greens. Preferably cooked with a little bit of ham or bacon. And another side can be potatoes. Mashed is good, but I like to cut them into slices, season them and bake them. It's like healthier potato chips. I'm going to pass on the corn bread, because for some reason it's never really done anything for me. Regular biscuits are okay, though. Dessert is brownies or a piece of pie - apple or cherry only. There's a lot of food I love that isn't on this list, but this is all my comfort food. My "it's cold out, I don't feel good and today is making me cranky" food.
